Worship the Giver, Not the Gift
“Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”
Recently, I came to a sobering realization:
Sometimes, without noticing, we end up worshiping the gifts more than the One who gave them.
It’s subtle; life flows on, and we find ourselves deeply attached to our jobs, bank accounts, status, or even relationships, because of the comfort or security they bring.
We cling to what we’ve received, forgetting the Giver.
I found myself so focused on a stable job—something I had earnestly prayed for—that I nearly missed the call to transition...
A Story from Scripture
“Then the Lord said to Abram, ‘Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own... but afterward they will come out with great possessions.’”
Genesis 15:13–14
“So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron... Then they said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’”
Exodus 32:1–4
The very gold God allowed Israel to collect as a blessing from Egypt… they later melted down and turned into an idol. Fear and uncertainty made them forget the One who had promised His presence, His protection, His provision.
A Modern-Day Golden Calf
We may not build golden statues today, but the tendency of the heart hasn’t changed.
We cry out for a job, financial breakthrough, spouse, child, friend… and while we’re waiting, our eyes are fixed on God. Then comes the answer. And slowly… our eyes drift.
We seek to preserve the blessing, rather than continue trusting the One who gave it. That’s what happened to me.
My Story
Four years ago, I was unemployed. Our savings were dwindling. My prayer was simple: “Lord, provide.”
He did. I got a good job. But over time, I became so invested in keeping it that I didn’t realize how it was overtaking other parts of life.
It hurt my family rhythms. It drained me emotionally. And when it was time to consider moving on… I froze. I had allowed the gift to become the source.
A Good Thing Can Become a Trap
- The job we compromise for just to keep it.
- The relationship that becomes our emotional anchor.
- The comfort or status we quietly start to worship.
We don’t always do it consciously. But we must be watchful. Because slowly, the center of our security shifts.
Realignment
Today, I’m still in that job—but I’ve shifted my heart.
I’m asking the Lord to help me detach my sense of safety from the role and refocus it on Him.
“The Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them. He is faithful forever.”
Psalm 146:6 (BFC)
A Few Questions for You
- Is there something God gave you that you’re now holding too tightly?
- Has your trust shifted from the Giver to the gift?
- Have you made a good thing an ultimate thing?
- Would you let go if God asked?
- Do you love Him more than what He gives?
Final Thought
God is greater than any blessing He gives.
He wants our attention, our trust, our love—not just when we need Him, but when He answers. Let’s enjoy His gifts without losing sight of Him. Let’s love Him more than what He gives us. And let’s be willing to lay it all down, if it means we get more of Him.
